Rajasthan In brief
Rajasthan is the largest state of India in terms of area. In the year 1949, it was included in India as a state. Rajasthan is called ‘Land of Kings’ and ‘Land of Princes’. The grand palaces here are excellent specimens of architecture. Rajasthan has always attracted tourists to its side. There was a lot of development here during the Rajputana rule. Rajasthan has been the land of majestic kings like Bappa Rawal, Rana Kumbha, Rana Sanga and Rana Pratap.
The history of Rajasthan is about 5 thousand years old. It is divided into three parts. First ancient period, second medieval and third modern period. George Thomas was the first to use the word Rajputana. This land of Rajasthan is the birthplace of ancient civilizations. The Stone Age and Indus civilizations flourished here.
In ancient times, some parts of Rajasthan date back to the Vedic and Indus Valley civilizations. Stone age items were found in Bundi and Bhilwara districts of Rajasthan. Today’s Jaipur city is the Matsya kingdom of Vedic civilization. The capital of Matsya kingdom was Biratnagar which was named after its founder King Virata. Bharatpur, Dholpur and Karauli came under the Sursen district in ancient times. Their capital was Mathura. Post-Mauryan sculptures and utensils were found during excavation at Noh in Bharatpur.
During 700 AD, most of the parts of Rajasthan have been occupied by the Gurjars. His capital was Kannauj. The Gurjara Pratihara Empire protected Rajasthan from Arab invaders till about the 11th century. Traditionally, it was ruled by Brahmin Rajputs, Jats, Meenas, Yadavas, Mauryas, Guptas, Yavana-Shungas, Kushans, Huns and Vardhan Empires.
